Brick Calculator

For brick walls, veneer and garden walls — US, UK and European brick sizes with your joint width.

Updated 2026-10-20 · Based on: standard block, brick and paver sizes with their mortar joints.

How to use the Brick Calculator

  1. Enter the wall length and height.
  2. Choose the brick size and mortar joint (⅜ in or 10 mm is standard).
  3. Subtract the area of doors and windows.
  4. Read bricks (with 5 % extra) and mortar.

Formula

Bricks per area = 1 ÷ ((brick length + joint) × (brick height + joint)).

A US modular brick (7⅝ × 2¼ in) with a ⅜ in joint gives 6.86 bricks per ft²; a UK brick (215 × 65 mm) with 10 mm joints gives 59.3 per m².

Frequently asked questions

How many bricks for a 10 × 8 ft wall?

An 80 ft² wall of modular brick takes about 576 bricks including 5 % extra.

How much mortar do I need for 1,000 bricks?

About 8 ft³ of mortar for 1,000 modular bricks with ⅜ in joints — about 14 bags of 80 lb mortar mix including 10 % for droppings.

Why add 5 % extra bricks?

Bricks break during cutting and delivery, and later repairs are easier with bricks from the same batch.
