Linear Feet Calculator

Total length of boards, trim or baseboard — or how many linear feet of boards cover a floor or wall.

Updated 2026-10-20 · Based on: exact NIST unit definitions.

How to use the Linear Feet Calculator

  1. Pieces: enter the length of one piece and the count.
  2. Cover an area: enter the area and the board width.
  3. Add a price per linear foot for the cost.

Formula

Linear feet = piece length × number of pieces.

To cover an area: linear feet = area ÷ board width (in feet). 5½ in boards cover 0.458 ft per linear foot.

Worked example

With the values preset in the calculator above: (Pieces)

Piece length
8 ft
Number of pieces
12
Linear feet
96 ft (29.3 m)
Cost
$240

Baseboard: how many linear feet?

Measure the perimeter of the room and subtract door openings (about 3 ft each). A 12 × 12 ft room with one door needs 48 − 3 = 45 ft; buy 10 % more for corner cuts.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between linear feet and square feet?

Linear feet measure length only; square feet measure area (length × width).

How many linear feet of 6 in boards cover 100 ft²?

A nominal 6 in board is 5.5 in wide, so 100 ÷ (5.5 ÷ 12) = 218 linear feet before waste.

Is a lineal foot the same as a linear foot?

Yes — both mean one foot of length.
